A look ahead to 2025 event trends, a favorite venue and more, in this BTS from designer Amorology
A chat with one of our favorite wedding designers.
One of our favorite event designers to ever grace 100 Layer Cake is Heather Balliet of Amorology. A design chameleon, she can whip up a multitude of styles, impeccably tailored to her clients’ unique stories, while maintaining a distinctly vibrant, creative and design-forward perspective. Heather is a true artist, and we’re excited to share a recent chat with her about creating timeless, yet on-trend beauty in an atmosphere where emotions are always running high.
Traveling the world, pricing services, and wedding catastrophes (what do you do when the bride faints during the ceremony?)… It’s all part of our Q/A!
Amorology’s work absolutely takes our breath away, as seen in this 80th birthday party.
Was your profession always in wedding and design? How did you decide to start a career in this industry? No, my career started in Social Work and helping at-risk families and youth but quickly transitioned after getting married and receiving other requests from guests who attended our own wedding to help plan theirs! I always say this career chose me, but it has become a beautiful blend of my love for families as well as a desire to fulfill my creative side.
We’re such huge fans of your work. Where do you find inspiration and how would you describe the Amorology style? Growing up with a mother who was an interior designer and a father who was a general contractor I have always found inspiration in architecture and home design but of course our greatest inspiration comes from our couples and their relationships! Our brand tends to go classic modern romance with refined yet playful touches and is very personal and detail driven.
What are your thoughts on incorporating trends into weddings? What are some key trends you predict for 2024 and 2025 weddings? We are always looking to create the unexpected with our events and stay ahead of the trends. We love incorporating new trends for our couples if we can also find a way to keep them feeling elegant and timeless! This year we are seeing the trends leaning into vintage and eclectic pieces while also incorporating playful touches with bows and heavy draping. In the next year we anticipate seeing more silver metallic touches being used, darker wood tones being blended together with light wood to create a balance and seeing couples leaning away from large bridal parties and wanting to keep the focus on themselves. We see a range of bright and colorful color palettes coming into play in 2025 and we can't wait to get our hands on those!
One of my favorite things at a wedding is how the event planner incorporates special, unexpected touches. What is one thing you would suggest to a couple to make their wedding more personal and unique? We always love creating something that is a focal moment/art installation of some kind that captures the guests attention and plays into the couple's personality. A unique seating display that is interactive and shows thought towards the guests we have found brings both design impact and excitement!
What’s your favorite venue to plan a wedding at? It's hard for us to name just one as there are so many incredible ones we have had the chance to work at. Anytime we get the opportunity to get our hands on a new venue whether we are in Italy, Mexico or here in the US it is such a dream for us to create something unique. We will say, Belmond Caruso will always have our hearts with that view of the Amalfi Coast though!
Have you ever had to deal with an unhappy client or pushy parent of the couple? How did you handle it, if so? Being that emotions can tend to run high with weddings there is always the possibility of moments of frustration with couples and parents and occasionally we find ourselves being the mediator to help get everyone back on the same page. We always want to quickly diffuse any concerns or un-happiness and have found that picking up the phone to have a conversation tends to go a long way. It is important to make sure our clients feel heard throughout the entire process.
What’s the most catastrophic thing you’ve ever seen at a wedding? We've seen anything and everything to the cake collapsing on site to a ferris wheel breaking down with guests on it that we had to safely get off…
