How Palm Royale revived our obsession with 1960s fashion and parties
And how to translate the style today.
The 1960s had a magnetism that always seems to pique our curiosity, an obsession that’s resurfacing here in 2024 thanks to pop culture, design, and fashion trends like those we’re currently mesmerized by in Apple TV’s new show, Palm Royale.
It’s a peek into what made the 60s so iconic—a palpable shift into self expression that paved the way for a sense of playfulness, joy, and whimsy not seen in the homes and wardrobes of eras’ past.
Like any decade, the 1960s were a tapestry of different movements (both competing and complimentary), woven together by developments in culture, technology and politics. When it came to art and creativity, the 60s exploded with expression. From pop art and consumerism to space age influences brought on by advancements in textiles, plastics, and other man-made materials, artists and creators of the time capitalized on the opportunity to challenge the status quo. Soon enough, this oozed into all of life—fashion and interiors became bolder, brighter; people threw decadent parties at home, and presentation was everything.
